Colwyn Bay

We've enjoyed an unusually warm and dry spring so far, but you can never rely on the British weather so we thought we should make hay while the sun shines and get to the seaside on the first day of the bank holiday weekend.

So we took the new car to Colwyn Bay in North Wales. The children played on the beach, paddling in the sea, digging and collecting shells. They ate fish and chips and ice cream and had a great time.

Colwyn Bay is beautiful. Ed and I passed through it a month ago on our way to a wedding, and decided we must bring the children as soon as possible. It's a sweeping bay with beautiful sandy beaches, and an old-fashioned feel. For example Ed found a smashing second-hand bookshop of a kind I haven't seen in years. It almost brought tears to my eyes as I realised how much I miss browsing in good used bookshops.

We all had a great time at the seaside, as you can probably tell from the photo of the kids on the journey home.

It looks as if you had a wonderful day, Mel. That photo of the kids, asleep in the back of the car, suggests the end of a glorious adventure. What's this about "used book shops"? In this part of Munster, you have to travel miles to find any kind of book shop. Hope you, and all your readers, enjoy the rest of the weekend

I used to live in Rhos-on-Sea and went to Colwyn Bay Grammar school (now the local comp).

It was a great place to grow up. As well as the beautiful bay there was also Bryn Euryn. (I can't remember how to spell it!) The climb up was a bit taxing, but the view from the top was lovely... try it next time you have a day out there

There used to be a wonderful swimming pool at Rhos-on-Sea, but it has gone now, I believe.

The school hockey team used to practice on the beach on alternative weeks, depending on the neap or spring tides.

Thanks for bringing back a flood of well buried memories!

Odd to come across these comments. I too lived in Rhos-on-sea and went to Colwyn Bay Grammar ('57 to '64) and played on Bryn Euryn as a lad. Happy days!
